The readings we were assigned to read about the GLBTQ literature really struck me as interesting and informative. One thing that David Levithan said in his article was interesting in particular. He said, "Here's the thing: being gay is not an issue, it is an identity. It is not something that you can agree or disagree with. It is a fact, and must be defended and represented as a fact."

While I have known this, I really liked the way this statement was put. Reading this made me think about how ridiculous it is that people make being gay such an issue when it is indeed a fact and an identity. I wonder what people who don't defend this identity think they are going to accomplish. Arguing against it being represented in literature isn't going to change this fact. Accurate and authentic GLBTQ literature that is represented is never going to affect people who do not identify as GLBTQ negatively. Instead it is going to make them more understanding and accepting of others who do identify as this. For this reason alone it is mind boggling to me that schools and libraries all over the country do not carry this type of literature. Instead, they should encouraged to have this literature by everyone in order to help create a more accepting and caring society starting at a young age.
